The APO Victory Bell

The service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega bought this bell in 1958 from a local school district with proceeds from their "Ugliest Man on Campus" contests of 1957 and 19 58. The fraternity installed the bell in the tower here on Malus Island on October 8, 1960. Originally, the fraternity proposed that the bell would give Northern "a tradition rich in purpose" while promoting good sportsmanship. They directed that the bell should ring after home game victories and celebrations of victory for the United States, and first heard its peal to celebrate a football victory over Eastern Illinois University.
