Tom Scarff's "Black Hole"
This metal sculpture depicting the quest for
scientific discovery currently hangs from the ceiling in the stairwell of
Faraday Hall West. Constructed of aluminum, aluminum cable, bronze,
pexiglass, and light, the piece measures thirty-two feet high, twenty feet
wide, and seven feet deep. Scarff is an important artist at the forefront
of contemporary sculpture. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago,
and his work is a part of many prominent collections including that of the
Art and Science Gallery at the Museum of Science and Industry in
Chicago.
