"Chick" Evans Field House
The George G. "Chick" Evans Field House opened in Sept.
1957 with classrooms, offices, various athletic facilities and a basketball
court. Originally fitted with a clay floor, a 1980 remodeling of the building
brought the installation of a concrete floor and improved training facilities
for women's education, athletics, and recreation. The building is named for
"Chick" Evans who, as Athletic Director and coach for thirty-nine years,
oversaw the expansion of the Athletic Department to: 30 staff members, varsity
and freshman programs to eleven sports, one of the largest intramural programs
in the Midwest, and undergraduate and graduate programs in physical education.
The Hall of Fame Room
The NIU Athletic Hall of Fame Room at the south end of the
Field House captures nearly 100 years of Huskie sports history with plaques
commemorating the outstanding accomplishments of 118 individuals and seven
teams. Student-athletes, coaches, and other lasting contributors are
enshrined here. The Hall of Fame room and cases in the lobbies chronicle
NIU's sports tradition in trophies, pictures of former championship teams,
and jerseys and equipment used in bygone eras.
