The Kiwanis Skating Bench
Used by countless skaters and winter enthusiasts
since its placement in 1941, the skating bench on the shore of the east
lagoon represents a lasting connection between Northern Illinois
University and the DeKalb community. Chauncey B. Watson, former Kiwanis
President, DeKalb community leader, and Northern Board Member (whose
name graces Watson Hall), built and dedicated the bench to the memory of
his friend and DeKalb civic leader Elvin Carlson. Mr. Carlson was an
award-winning song leader and President of Kiwanis of DeKalb in
1930.
