Northern Illinois University

Finance & Facilities

Executive Vice President, Chief of Operations

Message from Eddie R. Williams

As the spring 2007 semester comes to a close, there is a sense of excitement and pride campus-wide as the spring commencement draws near. My congratulations and best wishes go out to all NIU students completing their degrees at this time. In addition, my congratulations go out to everyone in the Division of Finance and Facilities for a job well done in providing a safe and respectful environment for these students to complete their academic studies. We continue to strive towards excellence in all the services we provide for NIU’s students and staff.

As you all know, the springtime also brings thoughts of the next fiscal year’s budget development. There is good reason to feel optimistic about the upcoming budget appropriations. For the first time in a number of years the governor’s proposed higher education budget included a recommendation for an increase in funding levels. In the next weeks, we will be meeting with the legislative appropriations committees to reinforce with these groups our budgetary needs and gain support for the governor’s recommendations.

Our many campus projects continue to progress towards completion. The Academic and Athletic Performance Center project is on schedule and will be available for use by the fall semester. At the March Board of Trustees meeting, the official name of the facility, the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center, was approved by the BOT. The Northern View Community project, the university’s first new housing facility in 38 years, has begun to take shape and is on target to open in the fall. This exciting new facility will serve married students, students with children, as well as graduate and professional students. At this point in time, there are rental commitments for all of the Northern View units. We can all take great pride in these wonderful additions to NIU’s campus.

Given recent national events, campus security and safety have become topics of great concern. Our President, John G. Peters, has prepared our campus community well for emergencies and challenges of this type. I do hope you have taken note of the recent campus-wide e-mails that President Peters has sent, which review our preparations and provide insight and guidance as to what to do in these emergency situations. I will only add that our campus preparations began many years ago, and thanks to the hard work and creative efforts of many of the dedicated staff in this division, today we have a safe campus, we have qualified and well trained individuals ready to respond when and if ever needed, and we have systems in place to keep the campus informed. Given recent events, we have been engaged to improve upon, update, and expand upon this preparedness effort. I’m sure our division is ready to rise to this new challenge and once again I wish to extend my appreciation to our staff for their efforts in this critical area.
