HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR A PARKING PERMIT?

Parking lots are color-coded and the type of permit you qualify for depends on your status and address.

Yellow:  Available to commuting students residing outside the City of DeKalb, those who do not have a DeKalb address, or those who live more than a 5 block radius of the Huskie Bus line bus stop. A DeKalb post office box does not qualify as an address for the purposes of Campus Parking Services.  A reserved parking space may be available for an additional fee.

Brown:  Students living within the City of DeKalb.  Students for whom a brown permit is not suitable because of their distance to campus may appeal for special parking consideration.

OrangeStudents residing in university-owned housing on a first-come, first-served basis until limit is obtained.  A reserved parking space may be available for an additional fee. Note:  Orange permits are available in stickers only.

Green:  Remote parking:  East Convocation Center lot, for students living in university-owned housing at a less expensive fee.  Contact Campus Parking for more details.  Note:  Green permits are available in stickers only.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I VIOLATE AN NIU PARKING REGULATION?  You may not have thought about it, but NIU is like a small city and as such, we enforce parking regulations on campus much like any other city.   The fines assessed for parking violations can be costly.  For example, the fine for parking in a handicap space without the proper permit displayed is $250, as set by state law!  Please be careful to park in the appropriate lot and follow the parking regulations.

WHAT IF I HAVE A GUEST OR NEED A PERMIT FOR A SHORT TIME?  Temporary permits are available for purchase when you need a permit for a short time (such as, a day, a week, or a month).  Also, permits are available for purchase by guests when the pay lot on Carroll Avenue is not convenient.  When you or your guests need a temporary permit, contact Campus Parking to learn about the options available.
